I don’t know about you but my first foray into the world of gaming wasn’t a shiny new NES console. Instead it was when I first laid my hands on one of these:
Man, this thing was awesome!! Not only was it a game…it was a watch too. I used to spend recess in school playing this thing to death. And the kid that owned it, he was so popular he went on to become president of the United States. OK, that last bit was an exaggeration but the kid that owned this game was one popular SOB. Informal clubs sprung up around these games, so kids could swap these handheld pieces of awesome with each other. Mine was Mario’s Cement Factory…
This little bastard looked simple but looks were deceiving. Bouncing between the four levels using elevators and opening the cement holders before they overflowed took some skill…and hours of swearing. I loved this damned game. And playing Game B on it was friggin’ nightmare. Sadly, it succumbed to its Achilles heel all too soon: having a mom who unpacked my school bag and left the poor thing in direct sunlight. FFFUUUUUU.
Anyway, if like me, you’re keen to relive the glory days of handheld gaming, check out PICA-PIC.COM. Over at that wonderful site you’ll find FREE! PLAYABLE! versions of all your favourite retro-handhelds! And that includes this…
and this…
YES. Totally recommend this site. Warning though: it is NSFW but only in the sense that the hours you spend on the site will get you fired. You’ve been warned.
